Description

GSO Newtonian GSN 2001 CR OTA
Aperture 200mm / Focal Length 1000mm / f/5 Optical Tube Assembly  - 94% enhanced coating

During the past couple of years - ever since prices for telescopes have considerably dropped due to production in the far east - the 200mm Newtonian with a focal length of 1000mm has become an increasingly popular choice for amateurs. We fully agree that a telescope of that aperture and focal length can be counted among the most versatile multi-purpose telescopes in existence.

The GSO Newtonian 200/1000mm is a new telescope in this range. It adds a package of extra features that are in our opinion unparalleled in this class:

-- high definition parabolical primary mirror, better than typical Chinese optics

-- thin secondary mirror spider vanes for minimized obstruction

-- larger illuminated field through use of a well-dimensioned secondary mirror. (Very important for astro-imaging and for observing with 2" eyepieces.)

--An ultra-smooth Crayford focuser for much smoother focusing motion and zero image shift.

-- Sufficient Back focus allows you to reach focus even with DSLR cameras.

-- 94% enhanced coating for a brighter image and shorter exposure times

The GSN 2001 - A True All-Purpose Telescope

This telescope not only offers excellent optical performance, but also high quality mechanics, forming a truly all-purpose telescope with nothing to be desired.

Optical Quality

This GSO Newtonian of course has a parabolic primary mirror for optimum performance. GSO has a reputation for making some of the finest mirrors in this price range. We guarantee diffraction limited performance, but in our experience the GSO telescopes are even much better than that. One particular advantage is the very smooth mirror surface that results in practically no light scatter.

Teleskop-Service guarantees a diffraction limited performance for all our GSO telescopes. Experience shows that the telescopes are even better than this usually!

We do careful tests of all shipments so that we can guarantee a constantly high level of quality.

Visual Use

The GSN2001 with its "classical" focal ratio of f/5 offers an excellent image sharpness for moon and planets.

- thin secondary spider vanes for max. contrast
- excellent quality parabolical primary mirror

These features make this telescope a top-performer for planetary observing.

At the same time its large aperture of 200mm (8") offer lots of light for serious deep sky observing. Thousands of gas nebulae, galaxies and star clusters are within reach of this telescope. Several galaxies will begin to show their spiral structure.

Fast Newtonians require complex and expensive eyepieces. At f/5 standard eyepieces will offer a good performance already. Baader Hyperion eyepieces offer top performance even for the most demanding users.

Astro-Imaging

The GSN 2001 is not only a visual multi-talent, but also extremely well suited for astro-imaging. You can take high resolution images of the moon and the planets with a powerful Barlow lens and the Philips webcam.

But you can also take excellent images of deep sky objects. For this we recommend to use a Coma Corrector.

The focuser is not just a cheap plastic focuser and also not a rack and pinion design with plenty of image shift, but rather a smooth, zero shift Crayford focuser..

A particular advantage of the GSN 2001 is its large illuminated field. A comparatively large secondary mirror offers an illuminated field large enough for serious astro-imaging even with APS-sized cameras. (see specifications for details). Typical Newtonians would only illuminate a much smaller field, resulting in serious vignetting towards the edges. The GSN 2001 does not have this problem.

Another great advantage for astro-imaging is the high quality 1:10 crayford focuser. Through it you can attain perfect focus needed for best possible image definition.

Very Precise And Rigid 2" Crayford Style Focuser - 1:10

The focuser is an important part of any telescope. If the focuser is good the telescope's full potential can be used. If the focuser is not good you might have trouble attaining a sharp image, no matter how good the optics would be!

For the GSN 2001 we have used an excellent 2" Crayford style focuser with integrated 1:10 dual speed microfocuser. These focusers have zero image shift and move very smoothly. With a bit of experience you can do such small focus movements as 0.08mm!

Primary Mirror Cooling Fan

Instead of chosing exotic and incredibly expensive mirror substrates we have chosen to equip this telescope with a primary mirror cooling fan to accelerate cool-down time to ambient temperature. Until a mirror is properly cooled down it will create currents of warm air that will deteriorate the image - no matter which mirror substrate is used. Only after the mirror has cooled down this effect stops.

Parabolical Primary Mirror

The very precisely figured parabolical primary mirror of this telescope is not made of cheap float glass, but rather of BK-7 optical glass that is free of internal stress. Thermic properties are generally better than float glass. At the same time the mirror is way more affordable than more exotic primary mirror substrates that in our opinion bring hardly any advantage at all (see comments under "Primary Mirror Cooling Fan"). For easier collimation the mirrors are properly center marked.

Finderscope of the GSN 2001

This is another detail which needs to be given the proper attention. An inadequate finderscope will make everything a lot more difficult for the user. For this reason we are supplying the GSN with an 8x50 achromatic finder with multi-coated lens and a good image sharpness throughout the field. Of course the finder also has a crosshair inside. My rotating the objective lens cell you can focus the finder precisely. With an aperture of 50mm several deep sky objects are already directly visible.
