Skywatcher Skymax-102 EQ2 Maksutov 102/1300mm with equatorial mount EQ2 - Travelmak 102 EQ2
... a compact multi-purpose telescope for terrestrial and astronomical observation

Skywatcher Skymax 102mm on EQ2

New better black line version !!!

This compact Maksutov with 102mm aperture is suitable for many astronomical and terrestrial applications. With only 28cm length it fits into your airline board luggage. With its light weight of 1.9kg it can be mounted on slim mounts and photo tripods.

Observing
No matter whether you watch stars or birds - the SKM102 convinces in all fields. 102mm free aperture gather enough light for hundrets of nebulae and galaxies. It has no disturbing colour fringes and enough contrast for lunar and planetary observations at high magnifications. Under ideal atmospheric conditions, magnifications up to 250x are possible.

Photography
The SKM 102 has direct T2 connection. With a fitting T2 ring you can attach your (D)SLR camera directly. Compact digital cameras with fixed objectives can also be adapted. This telescope is comparable with a good tele objective with 1300mm focal length and f/12.7.

Specifications:

-- Aperture 102mm / focal length 1300mm
-- Photographic speed f/12.7
-- Limiting visual magnitude 12m7
-- Resolution 1.15"
-- Tube length 27cm
-- Tube diameter 12cm
-- Tube weight 1.9kg
-- Main mirror focusing
-- Connection thread for photo tripods
-- 1¼" eyepiece receptacle
-- Red dot finder for quick target aquisition

SKM 102 with German equatorial mount EQ2... a powerful but still compact instrument:

The compact Maksutov and the transportable EQ2 mount are a powerful team for astronomy. The mount holds the telescope with good stability. Even wind or touches while focusing don't cause big vibrations.

The mount is delivered completely with a height-adjustable field tripod and manual fine controls. So you can - even at high magnifications - centre objects in the middle of the field of view.

The mount can be equipped with a motor drive thus making astro photography possible. Suitable motors are listed in the "Accessories" folder.

Scope of delivery:

Red-dot finder

-- Maksutov Cassegrain with 1¼" eyepiece receptacle
-- Red dot finder for quick and comfortable target aquisition
-- 1¼" diagonal mirror
-- 1¼" eypiece Super 25mm and Super 10mm
-- EQ2 German equatorial mount with field tripod

Recommended accessories (see "Accessories" folder)

-- Cleaning aids
-- Star charts and books
-- Red LED pocketlamps
-- Solar filter
-- Motor drives
-- Adaptors for photography
-- Dewcap

Maksutov-Cassegrain optical system Useful information by Teleskop-Service... The Maksutov Cassegrain System

A Maksutov-Cassegrain combines compact design with an image quality that's close to a classical refractor. Compared with fast refractors of the same aperture, the quality is even better because a Maksutov-Cassegrain has no disturbing false colour.
The Maksutov-Cassegrain is also an interesting alternative for astronomers who pay pay attention to high-contrast imaging but need a compact system.

On the other hand, a Maksutov-Cassegrain is not a very "fast" system. Compared with the aperture, the focal length is relatively long. This is ideal for lunar and planetary observation but wide field objects like the Plejades or the Andromeda Galaxy cannot be viewed in their full dimension.

The optical design (see picture above):

Light passes through the meniscus corrector, is reflected by the spherical main mirror and is then directed by the spherical secondary mirror to the focal plane. The abberations of the spherical main mirror are corrected by the Maksutov lens. This causes a good quality either on the optical axis and also off-axis. A further advantage: The Maksutov corrector keeps the OTA closed and makes it less senstive against tube seeing caused by temperature differences.

The secondary mirror transforms the main mirror's focal ratio to the full value of f/10 to f/15 (depending on the individual design).

Focusing:

The image is not focused by an external drawtube but by moving the main mirror by a fine thread. This kind of focusing hat the advantage of a very wide focus range - nearly any accessories can be mounted.
