Baader 2" Herschel prism - photographical version - for non-compromised solar observation
... new technology for light- and heat absorption. Including four 2" neutral density filters and transport case
Baader Herschel Prism

The Herschel prism's mode of operation:
The sunlight enters the telescope unfiltered. On the back side, 4.6% of the light are deflected by 90°. The rest of the light is focused outside the Herschel prism. This light's engergy is still very high and cannot be used for observation. Furthermore, it could cause fire if e.g. cloth is exposed to it.

The Baader "Cool Ceramic Safety" Herschel wedge offers the best solution:
A special ceramic, developed for space technology, accepts the light engergy without heating its environment. So the prism housing can be kept closed and the risk of glare or fire is banned.

Easy positioning of the sun:
A smart side effect of this ceramic screen is the possibility of centering the sun in the telescope easily. Just place the sun spot in the middle of the ceramic screen and you can start observing (see picture above).

Effektive 2" eyepiece holder:
With a 15° twist, every 2" eyepieces or accessories are securely locked and perfectly centered for maximum image definition on-axis and also in the field.

Standard accessories for the photographical version:

Baader neutral density filter

Both the visual and the photo version contain the same Herschel prism. The differnce lies in the different filter equipment. The version offered here contains four 2" neutral density filters ND 0.6, 0.9, 1.8 and 3. This is important to adjust for the correct brightness according to the used image scale.

Scope of delivery:
-- Baader 2" Herschel Prism
-- 2" neutral density filter (four pc.)
-- 2" Baader solar continuum filter for a better contrast
-- Aluminium transport / storage case

Recommended accessories:
-- 2" to 1.25" reducer
-- 2" Baader polarizing filter for continious brightness adjustment

What kinds of telescopes can be used with the Herschel prism?
The Herschel prism is intended for refractor telescopes without field flattener lenses on their back side. The objective design (Doublet, triplet, air-spaced etc.) is not important.

For all other kinds of telescope, we recommend the Baader Solar filter foil instead.
