Canon EOS 90D Body - Astro Version without IR Blocking Filter - 3x higher Red Sensitivity

This Canon camera is specially modified for astrophotography.

The sensitivity in the red range is higher by a factor of 3 than with the normal version. This makes it possible to make images of the interesting H-II regions of the universe.

Despite the conversion, the camera can be used for daylight photography. However, you need a manual white balance to do this. Alternatively, Astronomik even offers a clip filter (Art.Nr. 8h00ka) which can be inserted into the camera body and compensates for the extended red sensitivity. All functions of the camera except the optical viewfinder are available.

The problem and its solution:

The IR cut filter, which is built into the cameras, blocks a large portion of the red part of the spectrum. The result is that straight red nebula regions (H-II regions) are imaged relatively faintly.

When the filter is removed, the red sensitivity increases by a factor of 3, corresponding to the now perfect transmission. The important cleaning function remains intact. Likewise, the autofocus function is retained.

Removal of the filter without replacement or exchange for an IR blocking filter

Both variants offer similar results. Also the important functions like autofocus or cleaning remain.

We recommend the ASTRO variant with IR blocking filter if the camera is used with different lenses / telescopes. When changing the optics, dust can get in, which can be easily removed with the insensitive blocking filter.

We recommend the AstroOF variant if the camera remains permanently connected to the optics. This way, dust penetration is impossible and makes cleaning unnecessary. Even with this variant, the sensor still has a protective glass. However, this is not as resistant as the blocking filter.
