NATIONAL GEOGRAPHIC Compass
This robust compass with centimetre ruler and scale has a floating supported 360° scale and north arrow. Sight filament and slit for aiming at land objects. A practical lug makes attaching to snap hooks possible.

The compass is also well suited for polar aligning of astronomical mounts. With some practice you succeed in polar alignment to a fraction of a degree, so the compass is ideal if there is no view of the pole star or it is simply too bright.
Aim the compass at the horizon to the exact north or south direction. Remember exactly the point at the horizon.
Then aim at exactly that point along a straight edge of your equatorial mount. Make ure that the polar axis points at north. This little error even happens to professionals.
Set the exact lattitude with the lattitude screw. Now your mount is already well aligned. The polar star will already be visible in the polar finder.
