The advantages of a metal dust cover:

Even after high temperatures, you can unscrew the metal cover without any problems. A plastic cover can expand so much that it is difficult to unscrew afterwards. On the other hand, the metal cover will not simply fall out of the internal thread even at very low temperatures.

A plastic cover has abrasion so small plastic parts may land on the optical surfaces. A metal cover does not have this problem.
