euro EMC Observatory Pier P200 - Height approx. 650 mm, Payload 60 kg Telescope Weight
The star observatory pier P200 is uncompromisingly designed for high load carrying capacity. The upper part of the pyramid has a cross-section which corresponds to a tube with 200 mm diameter, because of this the pier has the name. The lower part, where the effective forces are the highest, the diameter reaches 400 mm at the 1000 mm high version. The stiffness follows the diameter in third power. The 400 mm diameter are 3 to 4 times sturdier than a steel tube with 180 mm diameter and 10 mm wall thickness!

An adjustable 4-point arrangement forms the especially rigid transition from the welded pyramid to the precision machined surface for receiving the telescope mount. The mounting plate with 222 mm diameter is made of stainless steel; the standard hole pattern is the same as the one of the S130 pier, so most mount adaptors from that series can be used. We will be glad to add further bores for directly attaching your mount by screws.

Any stationary column reaches its theoretical rigidity only with ideal floor anchoring. This fact is rarely given due attention and it is with a screw also not very easy to reach. The pyramid shape with its large surface area and the matching anchor sets provide optimum solutions for this issue.

The pyramid is made of 4 mm thick steel and white powder-coated. Construction and finish will provide many years of corrosion resistance in even the harshest observatory environment.

Anchoring to the ground
As mentioned, any column must be anchored well if it should be rigid. For the observatory piers, there are three optional possibilities:

Anchoring Kit 1 (image 5) for existing concrete surfaces Delivery as shown, but you get 8 times the parts. Comprising heavy duty M12 anchors and associated parts for a simple and optimal fitting.

Anchoring Kit 2 (image 6) when newly concreted. Two ring plates set during concreting with the threaded rods providing a particularly good anchorage to the ground. After curing the pier is simply attached to the anchor ensuring ideal power transmission. Each column height requires a dedicated anchoring kit.

Base plate (image 7) if the ground should not be opened up by drilling. As a compromise in the exceptional cases where the soil cannot be spot-drilled, we offer an optional heavy base plate. The observatory pier is screwed to the base plate, the entire unit is then adapted to the ground with eight adjustable feet on location.

Due to its over-defined footprint, this construction tends to wobble. At least the ground should not need to rest anymore, otherways the installation has to be adapted to the ground again.
