Taking an intuitive visual approach, for each spread of the Atlas, the Guide focuses on carefully selected objects, either as colored composite POSS plates or through the authors´ own eyepiece sketches. They allow you to estimate the visibility of features in the telescope while planning observations. The objects are assigned to different categories:

Object visible with 8" from normal country skies

OObject visible with 12" from normal country skies

Additional objects for large telescopes

Stars and other objects in the vicinity are highlighted, so they also serve as finder charts at night. An index map on each spread allows you to quickly find each object´s location in the Atlas

I know Ronald Stoyan and Uwe Glahn for more than a decade as very skilled and careful visual observers with a more-than-profound knowledge of the Deep-Sky universe beyond the Messier and NGC/IC standards. In particular, their outstanding talent expresses itself by their detailed, aesthetic but yet naturalistic sketches of all kinds of astronomical objects which I often use as references for my own observations.

The Deep Sky Guide – their latest opus - bundles these strengths in a novel, highly innovative manner.
