But it doesn´t magnify enough or is cumbersome to use: Even a tenfold field loupe requires a steady hand and strained sighting. The desire for a microscope quickly arises. However, high-quality instruments beyond the experimental kit models are expensive and take up a lot of space. USB microscopes, which originated from webcams, are an interesting alternative. Instead of a simple wide-angle lens, they have optics with a maximum magnification of 200x. A transparent spacer helps with focusing, and integrated LEDs provide light.

System requirements: USB 2.0; Microsoft® Windows® XP (Service Pack 2) or Windows® VISTA operating system, Windows® 7, 2 GHz processor, 1 GB main memory, 4 GB free hard disk space, CD or DVD drive. Do not use the enclosed drivers and software with Windows 10, but download the general "Windows Camera" app from the Microsoft Store if not already installed. This will make the microscope work with Windows 10.
