I first need to say that this reducer is very good, before I say that it isn´t perfect :) Reducers for large sensors are tough to design (looking at the strong curvature of the front element you get the idea), especially when they´re close to the focal plane.
- Mechanics: Built like a tank, solid, no rattle, excellent surface finish, both covers are metal, the lenses seem to have blackened edges and good AR coatings.
- Optics: On a full frame sensor the stars are pretty tight up to roughly 36mm diameter (sensor wider side), outside of this range (corners) curvature/aberrations become noticeable but still minor. Field illumination is consistent. Sample CCDInspector report from my test (focusing at image center): min. FWHM: 2.50´´, max. FWHM: 3.25´´, curvature: 25%. Tested only on short (30sec ISO3200) exposures on my custom made 250mm f/8 (f/3 primary) RC and Canon 5D MkII.
- Notes: For optimal performance it is crucial to match the stated 82mm back working distance. I conducted a test to confirm this distance (match to my particular OTA) and it turned out very consistent - exactly 82mm. Recommended tolerance for full frame sensors is ±1mm, exceeding ±2mm will start to degrade the corners noticeably.
- My conclusion so far: Pretty good, minor issues in extreme corners, about what I expected. I never tested the general purpose Astro-Physics 27TVPH & CCDT67 alternatives, but judging by the images from the Net I believe this reducer would be far superior on APS-C and larger sensors. I still haven´t tested it on a monochrome camera with filters and long exposure, so I cannot yet tell if there are any hidden issues at extreme wavelengths (on a visual range DSLR it looks OK).
