Astrolumina Alccd-QHY 5III 290 - superfast monochrome CMOS Camera
The ALccd-QHY 5III 290 includes the SONY STARVIS Exmor R back illuminated CMOS sensor. Starvis is a group of sensors with which it is possible to detect even the weakest stars in a real-time video. With the ALccd-QHY 5III 290 you will be able to detect a 9 mag star in a full-HD video stream, with a commercially available 50 mm f/1.4 C-mount lens. In comparison with a conventional IMX236 sensor is so sensitive twice in the visual wavelength range of the light in the near-infrared region even more than three times as much.

The readout noise is extremely low. In combination with the back illuminated sensor, this results in an excellent astro video camera. The only 2.9 micron small pixels are ideal for high-resolution planetary photos with shorter telescope focal lengths.

In an HD video stream you can reach up to 135 frames per second. However, this depends on the USB3.0 controller and how fast the data can be flushed (SSD).

Sensor and shutter

In the ALccd-QHY 5III 290, the built sensor works in "rolling shutter" mode. The STARVIS back-illuminated sensor technology allows the highest sensitivity and quantum efficiency in the visible and infrared range of light. If you are looking for a very sensitive sensor for low-light applications (2000 mV or more at 1 micron^2 when a 706 cd / m2 light source F5.6 in 1 s exposure), then you are absolutely aright with this model.

The housing

The housing shape is designed so that the camera, like the proven ALccd-QHY 5-II models, fits into standard 1.25" focusers or adapters. The fins provide for a fast and selective dissipation of the heat which is produced during the exposure.

The back focus is minimal, so that the camera can also be used in most off-axis guiders for auto guiding. The Lemo connector on RJ12 is robust and compatible to most mount controllers on the market.

The ALccd-QHY 5III 290 camera is also available as color version.

System requirements

The camera has an advanced electronics that makes a PC with USB 2.0 support necessary. The maximum performance can be reached only with a powerful USB 3.0 computer.

The operating software is Windows 7, 8 and 10 compatible and supported by 32- and 64-bit.

We recommend the ASCOM compatible software packages MSB AstroArt, PHD or MaxIm DL for the Autoguiding. For shooting the freeware SharpCap (link on CD supplied).
