SBIG Adaptive Optics for STX and STXL CCD cameras
At longer exposure times, various factors reduce the effective resolution of the astro image. These effects can not or only insufficiently be compensated by autoguiding systems. The most important effects are:


Seeing effects caused by the atmosphere
Sudden jumps of the image due to drive errors of the mount which are to quick for the autoguider
Vibrations through unintentional jolting or through wind


All these effects cause rapid position changes of the star - see animation at left. The result is a bloated star and also not the full possible resolution of the object. Fine structures disappear.




The adaptive optics from SBIG consists of two freely suspended, plano-parallel glass plates which are moved within milliseconds by stepper motors.

By this, the rapid movements are compensated and the autoguiding chip has to correct only the slowly occuring error of the worm gear unit. Thus you can obtain attractive astro images even if the seeing is not so good.



The result are smaller stars and more details seen on the object.
