The Canon EOS 850D Astro is a special version for Astrophotography.

Its main advantage is an increased H-Alpha sensitivity due to a changed IR cut filter. Exposures H II regions will result in great images.

Of course, this model is also suitable for normal daytime photography, but you need manual white balance. Astronomik offers a special balance filter for the Astro models for daylight photography (our item number is 8h00ka). All camera functions are still working, except the optical range finder.

The Advantages of Baader UV/IR cut filters for Astrohotography:

A disadvantage of these cameras is the IR cut / anti-aliasing filter that´s not designed for astro imaging. It cuts a relatively large amount of red light. But especially this part of the spectrum is important (H-alpha, H-II regions). Removing the original IR cut filter increases the sensor´s red sensitivity approx. by the factor 3.

The difference can be seen in the image above. The original filter has a greenish appearance and blocks a large amount of red light. The Baader astro IR cut filter lets the important spectral range of H-alpha and H-II pass through, making it look more reddish.

The tranmission curves in comparison:

Even more informative is the transmission curve. In the important range about 656 nm, where the hydrogen nebulae emit their main intensity of light, the original Canon filter transmits only 30%, whereas the Baader filter still has almost 100% transmission. As a result, the the sensitivity to (astronomical important) light is about 3 times higher.
