Polarlichter - Feuerwerk am Himmel ("Polar Lights - Fireworks in the Sky")

Andreas Pfoser, Tom Eklund
In German language

Auroras are fascinating phenomena. Occurring as Aurora Borealis and Australis in the polar regions of both hemispheres, their incessant play of colors and shapes astonishes people. This impressive large-format illustrated book captures this fascination and vividly shows how the light phenomena occur.

Meteorologist Andreas Pfoser explains the physical relationships that lead to the emergence of this natural phenomenon. The connection with the activity of the sun and the interactions in the earth´s atmosphere are explained in detail and understandably. Cultural-historical considerations and tips for own observation and photography round the text off.

The fantastic photographs, presented in a generous landscape format, were collected by Finnish aurora photographer Tom Eklund over a period of 10 years. From locations in Finland, Norway and Iceland the whole splendor of the auroras revealed itself to his camera. He also succeeded in documenting some events whose triggers on our daily star were recorded by solar satellites, so that the sequence of events can be traced from the solar flare to the auroral spectacle.
