The adapter fulfils several functions:

Adaptation of 2" filters to camera lenses: With this adapter, you can fix 2" (M48) filters on objectives with M54 filter thread. Via the M54 thread, you can aditionally adapt to other theads.

Adaptation of CCD cameras with M54 thread to the telescope: larger CCD cameras with full frame size sensors should not be adapted via T2 because the smaller diameter of this system would cause vignetting. For instance, the Atik 11000 camera uses the M54 thread. With this adapter you can connect such cameras directly to the SC thread and with the suitable adapter you can also connect them further to 2".

Note: M48 filter threads and SC threads cannot usually be used at the same time, as the filter extends into the latter. Only if there is enough space between the filter and the front element of the lens to accommodate the filter, both internal threads can be used so if the camera is connected via the SC thread, a filter can be used as well.

Adaptation of 2 inch filters onto DSLR camera lenses

Many astronomical filter designs are perfectly suited for use with a DSLR camera lens. Here Baader explains how to do this:

"Our largest cell mounted filters measure 2" in mechanical diameter (having a metric thread of M48). The clear aperture is 46 mm.

In order to ease the adaptation of our 2" filters onto most camera lenses, we produce a general-adapter, to convert from the ASTRO-2" Standard (M48) into a more common photo-standard of SP54 mm. This ring is named: DSLR 2" FilterHolder M48/SP54 (item #2408166).

Individual lens adapters for most camera-lens threads are available to fit onto this filter holder. Larger lens threads may be utilized by adding another 62 mm stepper-ring.

Lens Adapter Ring: SP 54/M46 (#2958046) / SP 54/M49 (#2958049) / SP 54/M52 (#2958052) / SP 54/M55 (#2958055) / SP 54/M58 (#2958058) / SP 54/M62 (#2958062).

Step-up Rings (for cameras lenses with thread larger than M62): M62/M67 (#2968067), M62/M72(#2968072), M62/M77(#2968077), M62/M82 (# 296 8082).

The animation (editorial note: fifth image) shows how it works: The lens thread adapter (in this case M62 or M55 or M49) fastens onto the camera lens, next comes the Filter-Holder M48 (# 2408166) and lastly any 2" (M48) Baader-filter will thread onto the assembly."
