Why is the conversion important for astrophotography?

A weakness for astrophotographers is the IR-cut filter which is built into the cameras. It cuts off a relatively large part of the red light range. The result is that red nebula areas (H-II regions) are shown relatively weak.

[{When the filter is removed*], the red sensitivity increases by a factor of 4, corresponding to the now perfect transmission. Functions like autofocus and dust removal shaker are preserved. Only the IR-cut filter is removed, the protection filter is retained. So the sensor is not exposed to the environment unprotected.
