Skywatcher Skymax-90 Maksutov 90/1250 mm on equatorial mount EQ1 - Travelmak 90 EQ1

... a compact allround instrument for skywatching and terrestrial observations

Skywatcher Black Line 90mm Astromax

The compact Maksutov of 90 mm aperture is useful for nearly any application in amateur astronomy and nature observation. Being only 25 cm long, it fits into air luggage and with his low weight it can be carried by compact mounts or photo tripods.

If you like spotting wildlife or stars in the sky, the BKM 90 performes convincingly in nearly all fields. 90 mm aperture collect enough light for several hundreds nebulae and galaxies. The image has no colour fringing and a high contrast - well suitable to watch the moon and planets with fine details. Under ideal conditions you can magnify up to nearly 200x.

Use the suggested 8-24 mm zoom eyepiece and watch the moon from a complete disk to almost the finest details this telescope can resolve.

Put the recommended solar filter in front of the tube and watch the sun without danger for your eyes. The 25 mm eyepiece delivers a comfortable sight, the zoom eyepiece gives the whole range of magnifications again - from overview to fine details.

Finally, insert a 45° Amici prism and get a spotting scope with a naturally orientated image.

To put int in short: a compact allround instrument for skywatching and terrestrial observations

The BKM 90 has a direct T2 connection thread. So you can adapt your SLR camera using the camera specific T2 ring. Also digital compact cameras may be attached. The Star Max is comparable with a good quality telephoto lens of 1250 mm focal length and f/13.9. Note: it is not suitable for full-format and APS-H sensors, as only a part of the surface would be illuminated.

Technical data:

-- Aperture 90 mm / focal length 1250 mm
-- Focal ratio f/13.9
-- Limiting stellar magnitude 12.5 mag
-- Resolution 1,3"
-- Tube length 25 cm
-- Tube weight 1,4 kg
-- Tube diameter 10 cm
-- Effortless internal focussing
-- Photo tripod connection bushing
-- 1,25" eyepiece connection
-- Red-dot finder to locate objects

BKM 90 on the EQ1: a compact combination also for beginners

A suitable astronomical travel scope must be ...

... simple to use without any particular technical experience
... very versatile ... useful for any type of astronomical observation
... expandable with accessories as motor tracking - useful e.g. for photography

All those demands are fulfilled by the Maksutov on the EQ1. The instrument is very lightweight, everything together weighs less than 10 kg, being very compact. This are ideal conditions for a lifelong friendship.

The EQ1 mount carries the 1,4 kg tube well enough without vibration caused by slight wind or focusing.

Leuchtpunktsucher -- Maksutov Cassegrainian with 1.25" connection

Strahlengang Maksutov-Cassegrain Practical tips from Teleskop-Service .... The Maksutov-Cassegrainian System

A Maksutov-Cassegrain offers an image quality near to a classical refractor, while being very compact. The image is much better than using a fast achromatic refractor of the same aperture which suffers colour fringing. A Maksutov-Cassegrain as a reflector does not show this fringing.
The Maksutov-Cassegrain is an interesting solution for stargazers who want a crsipy and contrast-rich image while using a compact instrument.

On the other hand, a Maksutov-Cassegrain is relatively "slow", as the focal length is with respect to its aperture quite high. Hence the strength of the instrument is the observation of moon and planets. It is also a good performer for stellar clusters, nebulae and galaxies but it does not offer a particular large field of view. Very extended objects as the Pleyades cannot be seen all at once.

The optical system - see diagram:

Light enters the system through the front end meniscus lens before hitting the spherical primary mirror. The spherical aberration of the primary is corrected by the meniscus lens. So there is a very sharp image on axis and in the field. A further advantage is that the front end lens seals the tube. A sealed tube is less sensitive for temperature changes.

The secondary mirror at the front element reflects the light back through the perforation of the primary, entering the eyepiece located behind the primary mirror. The secondary also increases the effective focal length of the system, comparable to a tele converter in photography.

The system is focused by translation of the primary mirror using a micrometric screw. This type of focusing has strong advantages, as a standard focuser is not necessary and the focusing range is very large. Nearly every part of equipment you can think of will get into focus of this Maksutov telescope.
