Astronomical association Tampereen Ursa (founded 1950) is made up of an active group of about 250 people who all share interest in stargazing, or in a more scientific approach to the night sky and space. Our dome and premises are located at the roof of a water reservoir at the Tampere city (Finland) recreational sporting area called Kauppi. Our main telescope is Meade GPS LX200-UHC 14", but we have also many smaller telescopes reinforcing our equipments. Most recent purchase (from Teleskope Service at 2008) was Lunt 60 mm H-Alpha Double Stacked solar telescope. The dome was modernized at summer 2009 after fifty years service the first one. Public presentations are held on Sundays at 19:00 continuing to 21:00 from early October to late March. Many other presentations is arranged when some occurrence (for example eclipse) take place in the sky. Celestia, Starry Night and other planetarium software –based presentations are given in our small auditorium via an LCD projector. Regular club meetings are held at our premises every Tuesday from 18:00 to 21:00, with the exception of the "night less" summertime, when the club activities are at the lowest and only lunar or solar observations are possible. The club evenings usually include short lectures on various subjects, equipment demonstrations, as well as watching NASA-TV if there is an interesting space mission ongoing. In addition to the club evenings and public star parties on Sunday evenings, presentations and private shows are held on reservation basis also to groups from schools, businesses or clubs. Our astronomical club also organizes training to members and public. The courses range from “learn the constellations” courses for beginners, to more advanced theoretical astronomy training. Generally, our facilities and equipment is available without charge for trusted well-known members. Internet: www.tampereenursa.fi |
| Pohjan Kruunu We are among the very few astronomical societies in the Finnish Lapland, as the only other one is in the very northern tip of Finland, Utsjoki. While our club is based in Rovaniemi, right on top of the Arctic Circle, we do have members from various parts of Lapland. The membership total is about 75. Our activities include gatherings for the members and other interested people, "talk astronomy", to learn about equipment, to help each other's projects etc. Weather permitting, we go observing during the winter time. This is going to change, though: as soon as we get our new solar scope, annual observing time will be extended from about 6 months to year-around! Of course we are planning to have a good outing for the transit of Venus, as well -- the whole night out. We have also community outreach: we give lectures and demonstrations at libraries, and we also give classes at schools of all levels. We are trying hard to get more young people involved in the wonders of astronomy. www.pohjankruunu.net |
