TS polar viewfinder

A properly polar aligned equatorial mount is essential for successful astro photography. Many mounts come with a polar viewfinder or can be equipped with it (EQ5, EQ3). Smaller mounts like the EQ2 or EQ2 don't have this option. Here, we offer a solution with this article.

Adaption to the telescope:
The polar viewfinder fits into the standard finder shoes of Vixen, Celestron, Skywatcher... telescopes. If you telesope does not have such a finder shoe, we offer them separately in the "accessories" section.

Prerequisites:
Like a standard finder, the polar viewfinder must be aligned parallel to the main telescope. This can be done by pointing the telescope to a target some 100 m away (tip of chuch tower, telephone pole etc.). Then, the finder screws are turned until this object is in the center of the polar finder, too.

Polar aligning the mount:
Set up your mount as shown in the picture below. the R.A. axis now roughly points at Polaris (α UMi). Set your declination axis to 90°. Now the telescope's axis should be parallel to the mount's R.A. axis.

With a fork mount, perform the setup in the similar way. The telescope should be parallel to the fork arms..

View through the TS polar viewfinder

Look through the polar finder and you already should see Polaris. Now twist the polar finder (without moving the telescope) until the depicted constellations (Big Dipper and Cassiopeia) have the same orientation as in nature.

Now adjust your mount's azimuth and elevatin axis until Polaris sets in the small "hole" at the circle around the center mark. Ready!

The viewfinder also has an additional image of the constellation "Octans" for the southern hemisphere.
