Skywatcher parabolic Newtonian 114/450mm OTA
... a compact and surprisingly well performing Newtonian for beginners and as compact travel instrument ...

Skywatcher Explorer 114-500mm parabolic mirror
Picture with optional 1.25" eyepiece

The smallest model in the new Explorer line
The compact Newtonian offers high light collection by it's 114mm aperture. In contrast to a 76mm Newtonian, about twice the light is collected and hence nebulae, stellar clusters and galaxies appear brighter.

This Newtonian is not only a good light collector, but thanks to its parabolic primary also a good performer for moon and planets:

Skywatcher and some other companies offer short Newtonians with a spherical mirror, mostly of 500mm focal length. We do not recommend these instruments as they cannot deliver a defined image for magnifications of 70x and higher. In addition to that, very often an undersized secondary is used to mask up this problem but creating a smaller effective aperture, diminishing the capabilities of the whole instrument.

This light collecting, fast Skywatcher Newtonian has a parabolic primary which enables diffraction limited images, so that the theoretical resolving power is reached in practice. Only by doing this, such an instrument can be used for a successful observation of moon and planets.

Customer quotation:
Until now, I observed with an instrument of similar aperture and focal length. I always thought that a small short Newtonian cannot deliver more. Now I used your instrument and it opened up my eyes. At Saturn, where I always just got a hint of a ring, it is now hovering free in space. Also, nebulae and star clusters are brighter - I think because the secondary mirror is larger. I am looking forward to more observations, as for me this telescope is the perfect portable universal performer.

Technical data:

- Aperture 114mm , focal length 450mm , focal ratio f/4 - no corrector lens but parabolic primary
- Tube weight: 2.4 kg
- Parabolic primary for full sharpness
- Central mark at primary to assist for collimation
- Short 1,25" focuser for better field illumination - the field is fully illuminated
- Secondary mirror diameter 34mm (minor axis)
- Secondary mirror offset is considered, so the field illumination is symmetric
- Fully adjustable primary and secondary
- Secondary holder vane arms are only 0,5mm thin to minimize diffraction effects
- Recommended magnification range from 25x to 180x
Scope of delivery:
-- Parabolic Newtonian 114/500mm
-- Red-dot-finder "Starpointer"
-- Clampshells

Practical information of Teleskop-Service: ... the advantage of a parabolic primary mirror:

Comparison sperical / parabolic main mirror

Left:
A spherical mirror as it is used at many cheap models. It cannot focus all light into a clearly defined focus. As a result, the images are blurred and at stars, moon and planets the instrument cannot reach what it could do with its aperture.

Right:
A parabolic mirror of good quality focuses all rays into the same point. The image gets sharp and contrasty. The telescope can be made faster and more compact while having a higher image quality as well.
