Description
Celestron Radial Guider - off axis guider with SC thread
... imaging and guiding through the same instrument !

The Celestron Radial Guider is an important accessory for imaging. At exposure times of several minutes you have to control the tracking of the mount. Usually you use a 2nd instrument parallel to the imaging one, but alternatively you can use an off axis guider.

The Celestron Radial Guider in a nutshell

-- Connection at telescope end: SC thread
-- Connection at camera end T2 thread
-- Connection at side arm for 1,25" equipment (eyepiece or guide camera)

At the guider edge is a small prism that reflects out light sideways. The stars in this beam will be used for guiding. The prism can be moved and the holder rotated to cover a large field for finding a suitable guide star.

The advantages of using an off axis guiders

An additional guide scope increases the total mass and the burden for the mount. Also a guide scope costs money. In this context the off axis guider is very economical.

However, the main advantage is the use of the very same instrument for imaging and guiding. No mechanical flexure or misalignment can happen without being noticed straight away. Hence the risk of getting trailed star images is smaller. Also you gain optimum resolution as you guide and image through the same piece of optics.
How does an off axis guider work:

The principle is very simple - the edge of the off axis guider bears a small prism which is outside the field of view of the main camera you are imaging with. All stars which are seen by this prism can be used for guiding, observing them using the side arm.

Areas of application:

The off axis guider is made for long time exposures. This means anything exposed longer than 1-2 minutes. From those times on stars can trail due to imperfections of the mount, making active correction necessary.

For which instruments the off axis guider can be used :

All instruments with sufficient back focus: Refractors, Schmidt-Cassegrains 8" or larger, Maksutov-Cassegrains etc. Newtonians are suitable for this guider.

Advantages of the Celestron Radial Guider versus other off axis guiders:

In our opinion the Celestron Radial Guider is one of the best guiding systems available on the market.

-- You can adjust the side arm by about 100° without loosening the guider connection. So the camera, the connector and the telescope remain a fixed unit. Only if you cannot find any guide star in this arc, you have to loosen the guider.

-- To patrol a larger field you can tilt the prism using a micrometer screw. Much more elegant than just shifting something, and much more precise to align. The clamping works by a spring to assure to get a safe position at any time.

The result - you have no problem at all to find a guide star, and using the easy accessible knurled knobs even using them with gloves is not an issue.
