The DSLR cameras by Canon are proven as good performers for astro imaging. Their main advantage is that the photographer is not depending to a computer when shooting in the field.

A disadvantage of these cameras is the IR cut / anti-aliasing filter that's not designed for astro imaging. It cuts a relatively large amount of red light. But especially this part of the spectrum is important (H-alpha, H-II regions...). Removing the original IR cut filter increases the sensor's red sensitivity approx. by the factor 3.

Important information on the filter removal:

-- the original filter is removed by an authorized Canon Service Company. The Canon warranty is not voided.
-- the service company corrects the auto focus sensors so AF still works correctly without filter.
-- the anti-dust-systems remains functional.
-- if using the camera in daylight, the white balance has to be adjusted manually.
