Description

Counterweight - 4.5kg - for 20mm counterweight shaft diameter

This counterweight for astronomical mounts weighs 4.5kgs and fits on all mounts with 20mm counterweight shaft diameter (see examples below). If you don't mind the gap you can also use it on mounts with 18mm counterweight shaft diameter (e.g. EQ6, HEQ5).

Compatible Mounts (examples):

Skywatcher ... EQ-3, EQ-5
Vixen ... GP Series, Sphinx Series
Meade ... LXD 75, LXD 55, Bresser MON 2
Teleskop-Service ... Astro 5
Celestron ... Advanced Mount and Advanced Mount GoTo (CG5)

Hands-on Advice from Teleskop-Service - How to balance the telescope:

For maximum stability of your setup the mount and telescope needs to be properly balanced. This can be easily done in three steps:

1. Place the counterweight on the lowest position on the counterweight shaft and unlock both axes (RA and DEC).

2. Move the telescope into a horizontal position. Move the telescope further to the front or further back until the telescope is balanced.

3. Turn the RA axis until the counterweight shaft is precisely horizontal. Now move the counterweight towards the telescope until the counterweight precisely balances the telescope.

Balancing an alt-azimuth mount with counterweight shaft (e.g. Giro III) works analogous.

How many counterweights should I use?

We recommend to move the counterweight close to the RA axis of the mount in order to reduce vibrations. It is better to use additional counterweights closer to the telescope, rather than less counterweights further outside on the counterweight shaft.
